Mr Dutton, Minister for Home Affairs, delivered a National Press Club address, which was followed by a Q&A session with the media. In the video below there is a question from Michael Keating for Mr Dutton that was related to cyber security.
Transcipt is below:
Sabra Lane: And our last questions from Keating Media –
Michael Keating – Michael Keating from Keating Media Minister As a member of the Five Eyes some people say Australia is up there with the US and the UK on the global cybersecurity rankings, where do
you think Australia sits on the global rankings and why, and what are your plans for the future of cybersecurity in Australia.
Peter Dutton – Well I would say that we’re number one of course Michael, as you could expect. Look there’s a lot that we that we do with our Five Eyes partners other international partners as well to make sure that we exchange intelligence and information, obviously significant agreements around what can be shared with our partners and in many cases including in some recent thwarted terrorist attempts it has been based on the supply of information to us.
There’s no doubt a lot that the Americans and the Brits in particular can share with us at the moment around cybersecurity and there is a lot that the private sector is doing within our respective countries as well. So I think we punch above our weight for an island nation 24 million people and you know with a big moat around us.
So I think we do pretty well, but we work at our best when we’re working closely with those agencies relying on those traditional relationships and those relationships are as strong as they’ve ever been and they will strengthen I believe with the construct of this Home Affairs portfolio because all of us have in mind, obviously wanting to keep people safe and secure.
