The Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack MP will today address the National Press Club of Australia. The title for his #NPC address is “Stronger regions make for a stronger Australia.” Mr McCormack is currently Acting Prime Minister with Malcolm Turnbull overseas.
The following is from the NPC website.
“In his maiden speech in 2010, Michael McCormack stated: “Politics is not about power; it is about people-representing those people and speaking up for them loudly, often and passionately. I have lived my life by this motto: I promise not to be silent when I ought to speak. That is my commitment to the people of the Riverina and to this parliament.” Local journalist, turned small businessman, won the seat of Riverina in 2010 and has since held a range of Ministerial positions since the Liberal-Nationals Government was elected in 2013.
Now Deputy Prime Minister, Mr McCormack seeks to start a conversation with all Australians on the opportunities and challenges within his new role for regional Australia and the nation. The Deputy Prime Minister will update the National Press Club on his Infrastructure and Transport portfolio and his new leadership of The Nationals.”
Mr McCormack rose to the position of Leader of the Nationals and Deputy Prime Minister of Australia when elected to the leadership position on 26 February 2018. This came following the resignation of Barnaby Joyce who had filled the role since February 2016.
Mr McCormack is from Wagga Wagga where he was the editor of the Daily Advertiser for more than 10 years. When he was appointed editor in 1991, aged 27, he was reputedly the youngest newspaper editor in Australia.
His ministerial roles have been the Minister for Small Business from July 2016 – December 2017, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Minister for Defence Personnel from December 2017 – March 2018. Mr McCormack is currently the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport.
